Chetham's Library in Manchester is the oldest free public reference library in the English-speaking world. 📖 It holds more than 100,000 volumes of printed books, manuscripts and diaries, letters and deeds, prints and paintings. It was established in 1653 under the will of Humphrey Chetham, a prosperous Manchester textile merchant, banker and landowner. The building that houses the library is even older, dating back to 1422.
