In spring, a female polar bear left her cub of the year playing behind on the melting sea ice as she set off on an aquatic stalk. She had spotted a bearded seal resting far away on the ice, across a wide lead of open water. Disappearing among the drifting ice floes, she moved silently into the sea and began a long underwater crossing. She resurfaced astonishingly close to the seal, right in front of it.
