Twelve thousand years ago, the ground sloth currently on display in “The Human Footprint” gallery had the misfortune to fall into a pit, which filled over time with bat dung. What was a lousy day for the sloth turned out well for us, as the circumstances of its demise created an ideal environment for preservation.
